Texas Longhorn: The Greatest Song Ever Written

Yeah, this IS the greatest song ever written, and it’s not close. It’s Texas Longhorn by Django Walker. If you are a fan of the University of Texas, then you get it. If you aren’t a fan, then you may as well just scroll on, bubba, because you’re not gonna like it.

It doesn’t get any better than this song – a celebration of the long, historic, successful history of the Texas Longhorns football team. Many universities have histories of memorable teams and players, but those of us who have been fans of the Texas Longhorns are convinced that our team has the greatest history. We are, of course, absolutely correct.

Django Walker, who wrote this song, is from Austin, Texas. He grew up in the UT culture and saw in person many games at Darrell K. Royal Memorial Stadium. His mother and sister are UT grads, and Walker fully appreciates and understands the remarkable history and traditions of Texas football. By the way, his Dad, who took Django to many Longhorns games, was the legendary Jerry Jeff Walker. Yes, that Jerry Jeff – as if there could be another.

Walker perfectly – I mean perfectly – captured the essence of the Texas Longhorns in this exceptional song. He mentions some of Texas’ greatest players and memories. Django reminds us that we “saw Vince Young run for the roses”, and we watched “Colt McCoy throw bullets to Jordan Shipley.” We remember when Earl Campbell and Ricky Williams struck the “Heisman poses”, and we remember Major Applewhite, Brian Arakpo, and many more, thanks to Django and his spectacularly great song.

We have been Texas fans for decades, and our blood runs burnt orange, as Django wrote in the song. Our daughter is a Texas Longhorn, and now a Texas Exes (that is, a University of Texas at Austin graduate).

As Texas fans, we cheered for: Dicker the Kicker, Quan Cosby, Earl Thomas, Jamaal Charles, Cedric Benson, Justin Tucker, Roy Williams, Michael Griffin, Limas Sweed, Derrik Johnson, Roy Miller, Sam Ehlinger, Bijan Robinson, Fozzy Whittaker, Emmanuel and Sam Acho, Hunter Lawrence, Quinn Ewers, Arch Manning, and many, many more. Only a few of these great Longhorns made their mark in the NFL, but that’s not the point. They are legends in Austin.

If you’re a Longhorn fan like me, you can’t hear this song without choking up. It’s the memories, the great players and coaches, the fantastic games. It’s the long history of one of the great universities and football programs in the country. Texas Longhorn beautifully tells the story of being a Longhorn fan, as only a true burnt orange blooded fan could do. Texas Longhorn should become the new UT school anthem. This is the greatest song ever written, and that makes Django the greatest songwriter who ever lived.

By the way, Vince Young and Colt McCoy are the two greatest college quarterbacks in history. And it’s not close. We will not be taking questions, and we will not be listening to challenges.

If you can’t appreciate the magnitude and significance of this song, then we clearly can’t be friends. Whiners and dissenters will be stomped by Bevo and shuffled off to fester in College Station, Waco, or Norman, Oklahoma. You are, of course, free to comment on this story. I am, of course, free to delete any opposing opinions. Because they are wrong.

Oh, and never forget, O U SUCKS!
