Don’t let the gas pumps out front fool you. Yes, Rudy’s
sells gasoline, but that’s not why we go there. It’s the barbecue that makes
Rudy’s a destination for hungry people. It’s a no frills kind of place. You order your food on your way in, and find a spot at a picnic type table either
inside or on the patio. Then you sit there with the fabulous aroma of barbecue wafting
over you until you are certain you can’t stand to wait another minute to
eat.
There are, of course, many restaurants that feature
barbecue, and once you have tried them, chances are you’re going to return
to Rudy’s time and time again. We return simply because the food is great, the
service is prompt and friendly, and we like the atmosphere. What other reasons
make you choose one restaurant over another? That’s about it.
Rudy’s offers meat by the pound, half-pound, sandwiches, sides, desserts, and ice-cold drinks. I have tried the pulled pork, brisket, turkey, three-bean salad, coleslaw, potato salad, and the peach cobbler. The problem at Rudy’s is trying to decide what to eat – everything is tasty; everything is worth trying.
On our last visit, I had smoked turkey on a lightly grilled bun with coleslaw. It was simple but excellent - the perfect taste for me. The light smokiness of the turkey and the bun lightly grilled with a touch of butter made my night. I didn’t even put any sauce on it, and it was one of those rare times when you take a bite, look again at the sandwich in your hand and wonder how can something so simple taste so great?
