At just 20 years old, Simeon Woods Richardson is already near the top of the Toronto Blue Jays top prospects list. The RHP from Sugar Land, Texas is a strikeout ace, and is with the Jays in Spring Training trying to make the 2021 roster.
Woods Richardson was drafted in 2018 in the 2nd round by the New York Mets, out of Kempner High School, and assigned to the GCL Mets (Rookie). After 5 games and 11.1 innings, he had not allowed an earned run, struck out 15 and walked only 4. The Mets moved him up to their full season rookie team at Kingsport (Appalachian Lg.) where he threw 6 innings in 2 games, striking out 11 and zero walks.
He began the 2019 campaign with the Columbia Fireflies (full season A, South Atlantic League) before he was traded to the Blue Jays along with another player for Marcus Stroman. The Jays sent him to the Dunedin Blue Jays (Advanced-A, Florida State Lg.) where he spent the rest of the season. For the year, Woods Richardson was 6-10, 3.80 ERA, 1.125 WHIP, with an exceptional 5.25 K/BB ratio in 26 games, 106.2 innings.
The young pitcher spent some time in 2020 at the Blue Jays alternate training site, and was invited to 2021 Spring Training. He’s off to a good start this year; showing the promise that made him a high pick for the Mets, a good return for Stroman in trade, and MLB’s #87 top prospect. The Jays obviously have high hopes for this guy, and he’s ready to make his bid for a roster spot.
