Prospect Spotlight: Connor Hollis

An impressive NCAA career for Connor Hollis set him up for a chance in pro baseball. Although he went undrafted, in 2018 the Tampa Bay Rays came through with a free agent contract, and he responded with 2 outstanding minor league seasons.

Hollis was a star at Lamar High School in Arlington, Texas before heading south to the University of Houston. Over 5 seasons as a Cougar, playing all four infield positions, Connor hit .293/.393, with 217 hits, 39 doubles, 7 triples, and 4 home runs. He sat out most of the 2015 season due to injury, but otherwise, he helped the Cougars to NCAA tournament appearances in 2014 and 2017 (tournament champions), and 2017-2018 American Athletic Conference Championships. Connor didn’t just play baseball at Houston - he earned Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in finance in a well-rounded, stellar college career.

After signing in 2018 as a free agent, Hollis went to the Princeton Rays (full season Rookie), where he tore up Appalachian League pitching with a .365/.469/.553 slash line in 48 games. His 2019 season saw him start with Bowling Green (full season A), sent on an injury rehab stint to the Rays Gulf Coast League (Rookie) squad, before heading back to the Hot Rods, and then finishing the year with the Charlotte Stone Crabs (High-A). He spent some time that year on the injured list, but overall, he hit .266/.367 for the year.

As with many others, Hollis’ story is further proof that going undrafted isn’t the end - especially considering the extensive educational experience that will be there long after he retires from baseball.

He’s listed with Bowling Green again for the start of the 2021 season, now the Rays High-A affiliate. The way Hollis plays, he could see some time this year with the Double-A Montgomery Biscuits, but wherever he is, you know he will continue to prove he belongs in pro baseball.
