Prospect Spotlight: Jordan Groshans

Jordan Groshans is a man on the move. He was the 2018 1st round pick for the Toronto Blue Jays, and after two seasons in the minors, he’s getting his first big league spring training look. The big shortstop from Magnolia High School (Magnolia, Texas) is the #46 MLB top prospect, and #3 for the Blue Jays.

Although he missed time in 2019 due to a foot injury, his play through 71 minor league games in 2018-2019 was enough for the Jays to invite him this spring to see what he can do around Major League talent.

Groshans began his pro career with the Gulf Coast League Blue Jays (Rookie.) In 37 games, he slashed .331/.390/.500, with 47 hits and only 29 strikeouts. A short, late-season stint in the Appy League with Bluefield saw him slump to .182, for an overall .296 - a solid first year performance. In 2019, he skipped two levels, moving up to Lancaster (Midwest League, full-season A) where in 23 games, he hit .337 with a .427 OBP before the injury ended his season. He spent some quality time in 2020 at the Jays alternate training site, setting him up for spring training 2021.

The 21 year-old had two plate appearances in the Jays first 2021 spring game - he struck out and grounded out, leaving one runner on base. He will get some more playing time before likely being sent to minor league camp.

As of this writing, Groshans is listed on the Low-A Dunedin Blue Jays, however, I wouldn’t be surprised to see him start the season with the High-A Vancouver Canadians, or possibly the Double-A New Hampshire Fisher Cats. He has competition in the organization, but he has the talent to make a splash for the Blue Jays in the future.
