Prospect Spotlight: Michael Cuevas

Minor League baseball players suffered through a year with no chance for them to work during the 2020 shut down. Young guys like Michael Cuevas were forced to sit out of their chosen profession, however, the promise of a full season of play awaits this summer.

Cuevas, a 19 year-old right-handed pitcher, was a 2019 23rd round pick by the Washington Nationals out of Brennan High School in San Antonio, Texas. He did have the chance that year to start his pro career after signing with the Nationals, assigned to the Gulf Coast League Nationals.

Michael’s first pro season was short, as is the case with amateur draftees, beginning in July after the draft. For the year, he was 1-0 in 8 games with one start and one save. He pitched 15.1 innings, allowed 10 hits, 8 walks, with 9 strikeouts. He allowed just one earned run for an 0.59 ERA with a 1.17 WHIP.

With only 8 games experience, it’s likely Cuevas will again report to the Nationals Gulf Coast League complex in Florida, at least to begin the season. He is not yet in the Washington top prospects list, but look for Michael to rise to the occasion and make a name for himself.
