Prospect Spotlight: John Doxakis

Minor League Baseball will soon begin the 2021 season, after canceling last year’s schedule. With the start of a new season (at least we hope so), prospects like John Doxakis renew their efforts at proving they belong.

Doxakis, a left-handed pitcher in the Tampa Bay Rays organization, begins his second season in pro baseball. Going into the season, John is listed as the Rays’ #28 prospect. He was a 2019, round 2 pick out of Texas A&M University, and spent the 2019 season with the Hudson Valley Renegades (New York-Penn League, Short-season A.)

For his first pro season, the 6’4 lefty appeared in 12 games, starting 10 for the 2nd place Renegades. John threw 32.2 innings, walked 11, struck out 31, with a 1.93 ERA, 0.95 WHIP, only allowing a .174 opponent batting average. He gave up 20 hits with no home runs.

His college career in College Station, Texas saw him appear in 58 games for the Aggies - 37 starts, a 19-12 record, 2.98 ERA, 1.11 WHIP, 247.2 innings, 78 walks, 258 strikeouts.

As of this writing, John is still assigned to the Gulf Coast League Rays, something that could easily change for this talented prospect. Look for John to show what he can do and move up in the Rays organization.
