I Am Moving To A Pacific Atoll

Okay, probably not, but it sure is an attractive possibility. I have long been fascinated by South Pacific islands and atolls, and for years have entertained the possibility of visiting several. The weather is fantastic (year round daily average of 79°), the beaches and water are incredible, the coconut palm trees flutter their leaves gracefully in the ocean breeze, and the scenery is memorable.

To my surprise, I discovered that many islands are actually for sale. For example, Nengo Nengo in French Polynesian is available. This atoll (made up of a group of tiny coral islands totaling about 3.5 square miles of land surrounding a lagoon) looks like a paradise. This tiny Pacific Shangri-La is only about 500 miles from Tahiti, and 300 miles from Fakarava (both popular tourist destinations.)

Nengo Nengo is uninhabited but has a small village used as a base for a pearl farming operation. The airstrip is reported as in usable condition, within easy reach of other, larger French Polynesian islands, such as Tahiti and Fakarava. (Nengo Nengo is 3000 miles from Honolulu, and less than 1000 miles from Pitcairn Island, the final landing place of Fletcher Christian and other perpetrators of the Mutiny on the Bounty.)

'Tiffany's Village', next to 'Larry International Airport'

Imagine not just visiting such a paradise, but actually owning the place.

I don’t yet know the asking price for Nengo Nengo – I contacted the realty company that represents the owner, but I have not received a response. I can only guess – somewhere around $30 million or so. Yeah, small change, right?

Okay, so I have a little money for this. Maybe $2000. So, I just need another… well, another $30 million or so.

This purchase would require at least a few investors. Unfortunately, I don’t know anyone in a position to undertake such an expense, but it’s not impossible. The possible return on investment for an atoll like this is limitless. Pearl farming, a future resort that would feature scuba diving and snorkeling, deep sea fishing, etc. Maybe a golf course with fantastic views and a fascinating layout – tees separated from the fairway and green by natural water hazards. Imagine a nice hotel with a large porch or yard where patrons (and the owners!) can dine on fresh seafood and fruit, sip refreshing tropical drinks, and gaze in wonder at the spectacular Pacific sunsets. Wow, this could be the start of a whole new exciting life!

On the other hand, maybe I’m just crazy. Yep, I’m sure that’s it. But just imagine…
