Prospect Spotlight: Nick Loftin

The Kansas City Royals have several top prospects in spring camp, and Nick Loftin is one who is getting a look. The 2020, 1st round pick out of Baylor is in a select group of young men with no pro experience invited to Spring Training - he’s the Royals #6 top prospect, and they are looking for Loftin to play a big role in the future of the team.

2023 update: Loftin spent the 2022 season at AA Northwest Arkansas and AAA Omaha. He slashed a combined .254/.333/.403 with 17 home runs, and 98 Ks in 516 ABs. Once again, he is a non-roster invitee to Spring Training.

Loftin, 22, was the Royals 2020, 1st round pick (their 2nd in that round), and the 32nd overall. He’s from Corpus Christi, Texas, and was a three year starter at Baylor University in Waco. Loftin’s college career was a good one: over 122 games, he hit .311/.370/.479, with 160 hits, 34 doubles, 5 triples, 14 home runs, 92 RBI, and only 48 strikeouts. Primarily a shortstop, in Waco he also played 2B, 3B, RF, LF, and even pitched 4 innings. His bat and his solid defense makes him a great prospect - a promising future fixture at Kauffman Stadium.

He isn’t expected to make the Royals this spring, but just being invited to camp this early in a career proves the Royals have high hopes for this guy. His likely 2021 first assignment is the Low-A Columbia Fireflies, with a chance to move up to the High-A Quad Cities River Bandits. Keep an eye on Loftin as he will surely be on the fast track through the Royals organization.
