Prospect Spotlight: Asa Lacy

Asa Lacy is a strikeout artist, and one of the more interesting prospects from the 2020 draft class. A first round (4th overall) draft pick by the Kansas City Royals, the 21 year-old lefty had stellar high school and college careers, and is set to show what he can do as a pro.

Lacy showed enough promise in high school for the Cleveland Indians to draft him in 2017’s 31st round. For Tivy HS (Kerrville, Texas), Lacy as a senior went 13-1, 0.93 ERA, with 128 strikeouts in 97 innings. Lacy decided that college ball at Texas A&M suited him better, and that proved to be the case. In 3 seasons in College Station, the left-hander went 14-5 in 42 games, 21 as a starter. Over 152 innings, Lacy posted a 2.07 ERA, 1.013 WHIP, 35 earned runs, 68 walks, and 224 strikeouts. His K/BB ratio of 3.29 rounds out an impressive career for the Aggies.

The Royals were likely surprised on draft day 2020 when Lacy was still available after the first three picks. They didn’t waste any time making him their first choice, and this year, Lacy is one of just a few pitchers with no pro experience to be invited to their team’s spring training. The Royals signed him to a huge bonus, and then had to wait as the 2020 minor league season was cancelled. They sent him to their alternate training site during the summer, but imagine the anticipation of drafting such a talented pitcher, only to be forced to postpone his pro debut for a year.

He’s already the Royals #2 top prospect, #1 pitching prospect, and MLB’s #30, without having thrown a professional pitch in a game. Although the Triple-A season has already been pushed back by a month, we all hope to see minor league baseball again this year so we can watch prospects like Lacy ply their chosen trade.

Lacy will start the 2021 season with either the Low-A Columbia Fireflies, or the High-A Quad Cities River Bandits. Either way, this guy is on the fast track to hopefully soon make his way to the mound at Kauffman Stadium in Kansas City.
